Planning conversations often start backward.

Someone needs to know how much to cut to hit a $65,000 total, or what sales volume gets the team to breakeven — that’s not a number you calculate forward with a formula, it’s a target you have to solve toward. Confluence’s native tables can’t do that kind of math any more than they can do forward calculation.

What-If Analysis brings two focused tools into Excel-like Tables for Confluence: Goal Seek, which works backward from a target result to tell you the input value that gets you there, and Data Table, which shows how a changing input affects an outcome across a full range at once, instead of you rebuilding the formula by hand every time the number you’re testing changes.

Picture an Operations Manager who needs total department spend under $65,000. Rather than guessing at cut percentages one at a time, they set $65,000 as the target in Goal Seek and let it solve for the exact cut required. When the CFO then asks to see the outcome at several different cut levels side by side, a Data Table generates that whole grid in one step — no separate formula for each option.

It pairs naturally with the Excerpt Macro: solve or model once, then excerpt the result onto a dashboard or leadership page, so it stays current everywhere it’s referenced, not just where it was built.
